Curriculum Principles & Design
Our key principles are that our curriculum:
- Ensures that all students are happy, healthy and safe and understand how to stay safe.
- Is relevant to our community and context so that it is right for our students and is informed by current educational research and thinking.
- Provides a rich, broad and varied experience, both accessible and challenging for all learners, where they are learning the right thing at the right time.
- Delivers opportunities for students to learn extensive, relevant knowledge and useful, transferable skills.
- Provides opportunities for all students to develop a high level of literacy and numeracy required for success in the wider curriculum and in adult life, including the ability to communicate by listening and articulating their views.
- Allows for a range of spiritual, moral, social and cultural opportunities that promote a student’s sense of moral and social responsibility, where they show understanding, respect and tolerance of a range of beliefs, opinions and cultures, both past and present.
- Ensures that all students are able to thrive and develop as healthy individuals and good citizens, upholding fundamental British values.
- Helps our students to develop a strength of character and resilience so that they can cope with choices and overcome the challenges they are likely to encounter in life.
- Enhances our students’ experience through our enrichment curriculum, where we seek to provide access to additional learning opportunities.
- Provides an appropriate range of opportunities and experiences to inspire students to make informed and ambitious choices for future pathways.
- Enables high standards of academic achievement that open doors for students so that they can be successful in the next stage in their education, training or employment.
Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and designed to ensure that all students, regardless of starting point, have access to a broad, balanced and knowledge-rich education. We have carefully sequenced learning to build on prior knowledge from Key Stage 2, ensuring progression, challenge and coherence across all subjects.
Our curriculum is informed by educational research, national guidance and subject-specific scholarship. Through strong collaboration with our primary partners, we have designed a curriculum that avoids unnecessary repetition and enables students to develop secure knowledge and understanding over time.
At Key Stage 3, students study a wide range of subjects that provide breadth, promote curiosity and develop the knowledge and skills needed for future success. At Key Stage 4, students continue to study a strong core curriculum alongside carefully chosen option subjects, allowing them to deepen their understanding and pursue their interests while maintaining a broad educational experience.
We are committed to ensuring that learning extends beyond examination specifications. Through rich and diverse curriculum experiences, students develop as scholars, artists, performers, athletes and informed citizens, preparing them well for further study, employment and life in modern Britain.
Our curriculum promotes high aspirations for all learners, including disadvantaged students and those with SEND. Appropriate support and challenge enable every student to achieve their potential and participate fully in school life.
We place significant importance on cultural capital, diversity and personal development. Through our curriculum and wider enrichment opportunities, students develop an appreciation of different cultures, perspectives and experiences, helping them become confident, respectful and responsible members of society.
Alongside academic excellence, we value creativity, performance, physical wellbeing and character development. The wider curriculum plays a central role in supporting students' personal growth, wellbeing and preparation for life beyond school.
