On Friday 12th February, 35 very excited students and 6 even more excited members of staff left Latimer for the 2016 French ski trip. There had been a growing sense of anticipation all week, weather forecasts and snow reports were checked many times and we were all confident that we were in for an excellent time.

The long journey down to Val Cenis passed more quickly than we’d thought (it’s amazing how a few DVDs manage to make time fly!) and once we arrived in resort we settled into the accommodation blocks and sorted out skis and boots. After a good (and much needed!) night’s sleep we were ready on Sunday morning to hit the slopes for the first time. Once they’d shown how good their technique was, our group of experienced skiers were off touring the mountain, going off piste and doing jumps with their instructor Christian. Meanwhile our 3 beginners’ groups (including our very own Mr Tamkin and Mrs Bowers) started to quickly develop their technique under expert instruction from Sophie, Cathy and Baptiste. The staff could not believe how well and how quickly everybody progressed, so much so that by the end of the second day some had even progressed from the drag lift to the chair lift and were able to do their first proper ski runs. Skiing can sometimes be frustrating at the start, but the fantastic never-give-up attitude shown by all was very impressive and was commented on several times by the instructors. Of course, there were some spectacular tumbles, some incredible wipeouts and some bumps and bruises along the way, but that’s all part of learning to ski! The entertainment didn’t stop on the slopes, as in our time in France we managed to fit in time for a bowling evening, a pizza evening, quiz and games evenings.

After 6 days of good weather, fantastic entertainment and brilliant skiing, all the students completed their ESF skills test and were awarded their official badges and their (more important!) Latimer awards certificates. Arriving back on Saturday morning after a week in the Alps, everybody was in good spirits and had thoroughly enjoyed their skiing experience and all the talk was about the next trip in 2018. On behalf of the accompanying staff I would like to say a massive thank you to all the students whose attitude, resilience and positivity made this a very special trip that will live long our memories.
