Geography

Through the study of Geography, students should always ask the fundamental questions of what is happening in the world around them and why.   Through Geography, they will explore a sense of place, space, environment, interconnection, sustainability, scale and change.

Curriculum Aims

Our key curriculum principle in Geography is to develop students’ understanding of the world around them and of the environment that they live in, enabling students to be global citizens who are aware of world events, allowing them to evaluate the impact they have on our dynamic world.

Our aim is that students think geographically about the changing world, becoming critical learners and knowledgeable, skilful and responsible citizens who care about the future of our planet.

The study of Geography encourages our students to become creative and independent thinkers and problem-solvers, who are inquisitive about the wider world in which they live.

Our Geography curriculum offers an up-to-date, relevant and issues-based curriculum with sustainability at its core. The programme is designed to encourage curiosity and wonder about the world. We want our students to be able to apply knowledge and conceptual understanding to new settings and through enquiry and problem-solving activities be prepared for life in the 21st century.

Our aim is to equip our students with the knowledge to understand how human interactions with each other and their natural and man-made surrounding make the world like it is to provide them with their answers.

Curriculum Design

The Geography curriculum is designed taking into account the Ofsted research review series which identified the need for increased teaching of human Geography, and for a range of fieldwork opportunities to be embedded across the curriculum.

Additionally, the seven substantive concepts identified from the Geographical Association form the basis for the spiral curriculum.

As students progress through the curriculum their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes. Each key stage will support students to widen their knowledge and understanding of the varying scales of Geography that affects both them and the rest of the world.

The curriculum spirals substantive core concepts of place, space, environment, interconnection, sustainability, scale and change. These are introduced in Year 7 and revisited throughout the curriculum in increasing levels of complexity, in order to develop student’s geographical skills, knowledge and understanding over time.
